Let There be Light (04 - 12 August)

The exhibition “…let there be light” explores the beauty of nature as captured through the lens of Mahesh Nair. Light, unquestionably, is the most critical component in most art forms, including photography. It is also an essential part of life itself! By using light to dramatize and highlight the beauty of nature, these photographs paint a unique picture of the natural world around us. Part of the proceeds goes to WWF.

Solo Exhibition by Roy Zhang
In this personal works by Roy, the mask created by each individual is an emotional interface for the otherwise hidden & forgotten feelings and emotions in our personal life. Emotions drive individual to act in certain ways, and in the same way the emotion within them drive themselves to create a mask – a mask characterized by the emotion from within oneself.

HanoiHaiku
19 June - 05 July
By Sherman Ong

Shown as a complete series for the first time in Singapore, these works were made in Hanoi, Vietnam during my residency with the Goethe Institut Hanoi. Presented like a visual Haiku, the works are intentionally left untitled; the juxtaposition of images produces their own narratives, temporal connections, and is open to many interpretations infused with the personal experiences of individual viewers.

STATEMENT
13th January

‘13th January’ is a pursuit of a particularly delicate shade of blue (this is you,) in the sky the artist witnessed, the day a loved one passed away. She has never quite been able to find it again. The loss, and its search, found itself motifs in planes, tree branches, communication lines (and this is me), things that naturally aspire skyward. This series is dedicated to the artist’s late grandmother.

She is currently working on a photography project that deals with stereotypes.

STATEMENT
Superheroes:

This series of works consists of a recollection of posed super heroes. Superheroes that were popular among children were being placed in unconventional situations and seen caught in the act of doing mundane actions. This work seeks to question how as people ages, they lose the innocence of childhood and also to remind people about the important role superheroes once played in their lives.

Vanessa Ban
BIOGRAPHY
A down to earth person who constantly dreams about film scenes, Vanessa believes that photography is essentially a visual medium for one to enter; apart from the one that we all currently live in. Curiously, she wandered into multiple dimensions of surreal emotive chapters to capture scenes from the greatest camera medium never credited; the soul. A firm believer in the state of mind, she shows the world the way she views it, with endless visual tryouts before allowing the work to express herself as well as the world she sees.

Mintio
BIOGRAPHY
Started her journey as serious photographer at an early age of 16, undergoing an apprenticeship under One-twenty-one Studios, one of Singapore’s leading commercial studios. Equipped with the technical skills and business acumen of the advertising industry, Min was given the opportunity to assist renowned local photography, Andy Wong at Rave Photography. Later on she produced a book “Journeying” showing a fashion photo-series of the social landscape of Singapore. Having a chance to experiment with the photo-medium as a fine art student at A’levels, Min went to pursue her BFA in photography under the School of Art, Design and Media, NTU in 2005.

Though with a background in commercial photography, Min’s passion in using photography as a tool for creating fine art grew in the course of her studies. She enjoys tremendously working with people, leading her to create images in the areas of Fashion, Portraiture and Dance. Her images explores intimate themes such as identity and relationships in a subtle yet sensual manner, reflective of her background as a young Asian woman coping with traditional values in an increasingly globalize world. Her images pay a lot of attention to how form and lines interacts within the frame, drawing out tensions within her seemingly stoic and restrained subjects.

Mintio’s background as a dancer has brought about several collaborations with various movement artistes. To date she has document works for dance companies such as Joji Inc, Compagnie Pal Frenak, Daniel K, Van Arts Taiwan, Dance Synergy, Arts Fission, Frontier Danceland. In 2007, she was the official photographer for M1 Fringe Festival and the World Dance Alliance. Mintio’s interest in film has also led her to work closely with filmmakers Loo Zihan, Elgin Ho and Teck Siang in several of their film productions.
